Crazy, Crazy Strange, and Crazy Cool

Hello CK Westbrook readers,

I hope you are all doing well, all things considered.

Crazy

The US Congress is behaving like a bunch of insane, power-hungry morons and insists on navel-gazing rather than solving the myriad of problems in America. My heart is breaking for Ukraine, Israel, and the many places suffering from natural (and unnatural) disasters. And I can’t imagine what it’s like having children in school now that we know 1 in 47 kids went to school where a kid brought a gun and 31 kids under the age of 10 brought a gun to school in the 2022-2023 year. No wonder gun violence is the leading cause of death for children in America.

Remember when Kate was young and accused of lying for saying she saw a boy with a gun at school? Now it’s so common, that probably no one would think it was a lie.

Crazy strange

Are we becoming meaner as individuals and as a society?

I read a book by Dr. Karyne Messina that touches on all of the above subjects. The book is called It’s Not Me, It’s You! How Narcissists Get What They Want and How to Stop Them. It’s incredibly timely regarding bullies, apathy, mean kids and adults, manipulators, and psychological abuse. It has a quiz to determine if someone is a narcissist and what to do about it. And does a dive into the question can people really change? If you have read The Judgment, you understand why I’m intrigued by this book and Dr. Messina has been intrigued by “The Impact Series.” I highly recommend this book!

PS – I don’t think the psychology community would approve of my use of the word crazy, but it’s just perfect for the world we are experiencing now.

Crazy cool

I read a book just for fun called Klauden’s Ring by JM Paquette. It’s a pure fun fantasy with vampires, elves, sword fights, and a fantastic and unique plot twist. I have started this book several times but was called away to write or read more serious fare, but I needed this for pure escape. I really enjoyed it and highly recommend it!

I had the opportunity to talk to one of my favorite authors at a Politics and Prose event in Washington, D.C. – Carl Hiaasen! He is an environmentalist, journalist, columnist, author, and also a victim of gun violence. His brother was killed in a mass shooting in Baltimore. His talk was awesome, especially when he went on about how strange writers are! I can’t wait to read Wrecker, it’s a young adult book and has already been banned in some places because it discusses some of Florida's dark racist KKK history.  If you have not read a Carl Hiaasen book before, I highly recommend them!

I LOVE Public Broadcasting, NPR, PBS, Masterpiece Theater – all of it! I had the pleasure of donating “The Impact Series” to the Maryland Public Television fall auction and was thrilled to help them raise a little money! I will also be selling the series at their annual fall Bizarre and Flea Market at their television studio on November 4.  Come by and do some holiday shopping, support public broadcasting, and say hello!
